A Citzen of All Times
By Heike Wolf
The story of the German family Schönau is based on the author's family history and covers the most turbulent time in German history. In 1913, the family leads a comfortable and peaceful life in Leipzig. The three children Charlotte, Dorothea and Heinrich are raised in a humanistic spirit with high moral values. Life seems stable and the future is promising. But World War I shatters their familiar world and the politically unstable time of the 1920s and early 1930s brings adventure, enticement and deep sorrow to the three Schönau children. While Charlotte's sister Dorchen enjoys the liberal cultural life in Berlin, her brother Heinrich is drawn to the wrong circles. Charlotte herself experiences the versatility of being a university student and suffers the first painful loss of her life.
