Behind all of this lay a poisonous, fundamentalist culture produced by a fierce commitment to biblical literalism and inerrancy, enforced by an authoritarian, hierarchical church structure. These troubling concerns, still with us today, are dealt with in a respectful, gracious manner, intended to encourage irenic discussion. We see many of the characters emerging towards a fresh expression of their faith into what we know today as Progressive Christianity.
