Lost in deep space, the Cover has been drifting for nineteen years, with the Shooting Star as a dead weight. The two ships melted together in the centre of the explosion that ended the evolved world, and no help is coming. Kata grows up on board the damaged ships, isolated and shielded from the world of the living, with only a pirate captain to install his moral compass. He is a psychic though, and never longs for company. The world of the dead is never silent, and Kata develops his ability to the point where he not just talk to the dead, but see them, and feel them too. On the edge of the veil between the worlds, the young son of the Lightbringer is perfectly content, until one day, Captain Mintalaxe manages to land their broken spaceship on a planet named Woods, and Kata is thrown into a world of blue skies, snow, and people who are not just inside his head.
