Free or $1.99, Rarely $0.99: What Kindle Deals Actually Cost

12 September 2026

If you have been waiting for a Kindle book to drop to $0.99, you may be waiting for one of the least common prices there is.

We have promoted 94,496 Kindle deals since 2014. When we look at the price each one was offered at, the $0.99 ebook barely shows up.

Where the prices actually land

$2.00 to $2.995,702
$3.00 to $4.994,550
$0.01 to $0.99673

Free is the single most common deal price, at 52.1% of priced deals. The $0.01 to $0.99 band is 0.7%.

From our catalogue: free promotions outnumber deals between $0.01 and $0.99 by 72 to 1.

In practice that means the useful thresholds are free, and then a dollar and change. A book that is not free is far more likely to land between $1.00 and $1.99 than below a dollar.

How deep the discounts go

For the 40,920 deals where we recorded both the usual price and the deal price, the average discount was 63.8%. The typical book went from $10.56 to $4.69.

So a discounted book is usually still a few dollars, and the savings are real rather than cosmetic.

What readers actually click

Free books drew 14.7 times the clicks of discounted ones.

That gap says something about how people use deals. A discount gets attention; free gets action.

What this does not tell you

These prices were recorded between 2014 and 2024. They describe what deals looked like across that decade, not what any particular book costs today. We also do not know why a given book was discounted, how long a deal lasted, or how many copies it sold.

If a price matters to you, the retailer’s listing is the only reliable source.
